Bill Myhren is an Engineer in Training with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering and a Minor in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder with approximately two years of combined experience in the field. He is currently shifting from his engineering career path to obtain a Master's Degree in Architecture and will graduate from the M.Arch program at the University of Colorado at Denver in May, 2013. He feels that combining these two fields is essential as engineering and architecture should have equal balance in a good design. His work experience and education allow him to diversify and further develop his skills as both an engineer and as an intern architect with the goal of being able to perform tasks related to both fields with his focus being on architecture.
During a past work experience at Facility Engineering Associates, Bill was responsible for completing a variety of projects. These primarily involved fall protection system design and load testing, façade and water intrusion design and repair, and working on an on-going project with the National Park Service to perform a GPS survey and condition assessment of underground utilities at a number of national parks around the country. While in the office, he was also taking part in writing white papers including how to measure light levels in buildings and an introduction to Fan Wall Technology. He recently obtained his LEED Green Associate accreditation and plans to earn additional professional certifications as he becomes eligible or as they are required for his career.
Bill's background in the structural engineering and mechanical engineering fields, as well as extensive training and use of AutoCAD, studio design courses, and a love for architecture gives him a strong basis to work on architecture projects. A few of his additional strong points include the diversity of his college and work background, attention to detail, and ability to develop and maintain relationships with clients. During an internship with The Farnsworth Group, he participated in commissioning and functional testing for a variety of building types including schools and health care facilities utilizing ground-source heat pumps and central utility plants. He also assisted with developing software-based tools to use in the field during commissioning. While Bill understands that architects do not typically use some of these skills, he believes that they have helped him develop a background that is unique and would be an asset to architectural design, planning, and construction monitoring, especially as they relate to projects seeking LEED certification.
In his spare time, Bill acted as the president of his Home Owner's Association and volunteers for Whiz Kids (a free tutoring service associated with Denver Public Schools). He also enjoys traveling, SCUBA diving, photography, and sailing.
